Family therapy is often essential for systemic change. Unfortunately, most play therapists lack training in effectively working with families. This experiential workshop will provide an overview of family therapy theories relevant to play therapy and sandtray therapy. Sandtray therapy is an effective modality to incorporate into family play therapy sessions to facilitate communication and connection. Participants will identify a frame to assess family dynamics, establish treatment goals, and identify situations that are contraindicated for family sandtray therapy. Participants will also identify sandtray protocols for increasing empathy/understanding, attachment, and family integration. At the end of this workshop, participants will have increased confidence in working with families and strategies to integrate sandtray into family play therapy sessions.
